Take courses at CUNY to begin a career as an administrative medical assistant

Administrative medical assistants are skilled multi-taskers who direct the flow of patients through an office. This program offers valuable training in medical office management and legal, ethical, and regulatory concepts that are central to this field, including HIPAA compliance and third-party guidelines for filing insurance claims. Students gain hands-on, practical experience in medical billing and coding and work with the main coding manual ICD-10-CM, CPT, and HCPCS Level II. In addition, they learn how to code diagnoses, services and procedures for all systems of the body. Graduates can sit for the Certified Professional Coder (CPC) exam, offered by the American Academy of Professional Coders (AAPC), and the Certified Medical Administrative Assistant (CMAA) exam, offered by the National Healthcareer Association (NHA). Vouchers for the (CPC) and (CMAA) exams fees are included. This is a self-paced course that consists of 500 hours 12 months.

Eligibility Requirements
High school degree or equivalency required, In order to sit for the national certification exam, candidates must have a high school diploma or equivalent. Exams offered by AAPC and NHA are only available online to candidates in the US. AHIMA only offers in-person exams in both the US and Globally.
